Drum brake puller for Volvo classic cars

22.12.2023

On this occasion, we would like to draw your attention to the brake drum puller for all Hump, Duett, Amazon and P1800 with drum brakes on the rear axle, which has been available from us for over fifteen years. The brake drum puller corresponds to the old Volvo original tool 9991791 and is ideal for loosening seized drums using hammer blows.

The drums of these cars sit with the wheel hub on a cone of the quick-release axle. The fit of the hub on the thru axle can be extremely tight, two- or three-arm pullers are often unable to cope and sometimes cause damage to the drum or thru axle. With our puller, this can be avoided if used correctly.

At SKANDIX, we often have customers on the phone who order brake drums because they were unaware of the existence of this tool and at some point resigned themselves to using an angle grinder to remove the stuck drums from the quick-release axle.

A few weeks ago, we had a PV544 with a brake problem on the lift. The brakes on this car had already been replaced not too long ago. At least three of them...

On the fourth, the person carrying out the work apparently couldn't get the drum off, the failed attempts are easy to see in the picture.

I was able to remove the drum with three hammer blows using the SKANDIX puller 1007477.

You can imagine the horror lurking under the brake drum.

From the same experience, we would also like to point out that all Volvo drum brakes have two different linings, with different lengths on the up and down brake shoes. The shorter lining always belongs to the front in the direction of travel. This is also sufficiently documented in the old workshop manuals.

If this is fitted the wrong way round, the braking effect is poor from the outset and the short pad in the wrong place will wear out again after a very short time.

That is certainly a different story, but work on the brake system should be carried out with the utmost care. And in the age of disc brakes, not every mechatronics engineer learns anything about brake shoes that wear out and wear in.

The magnificent brake drum puller is still available in our store under the number 1007477. It is significantly cheaper than two new brake drums.

And to make sure you don't make any mistakes when using it, please read our detailed application instructions.
