Guide to selecting the correct camshaft profile for your Volvo B18 / B20 engine:

A = Standard for engines with a single carburetor (B18A / B20A).

C = Standard for engines with dual carburetors (B18B, B18D, B20B, B20D). Can also be used for a moderate power increase in single-carburetor engines.

D = Standard for fuel-injected engines without a catalytic converter (B20E).

F = Camshafts for increased power at high rpm. Suitable for vehicles with sports carburetors, not for standard engines. Can also be used on the B20E with modifications to the fuel injection system. Unlike the S-shaft, it can still be used on road vehicles.

K = Original for fuel-injected engines with a catalytic converter (B20F). Ideal for increasing power in vehicles with original dual carburetors. Increases torque at low rpm. Originally used in the R-Sport B18GT / B20GT kits.

R = Provides maximum torque at low rpm. Only for vehicles with a sports carburetor, header, sports exhaust, and modified cylinder head (stage 1 to 2).

S = Provides maximum power at high rpm. Maximum power at 6,500-7,000 rpm. Provides approximately 8-10 hp more than the R-shaft, but less power at low rpm. Only for vehicles with a sports carburetor, header, sports exhaust, and modified cylinder head (stage 2 and above). Not suitable for street vehicles, as high rpm is always required.

Service instructions:

The following components must be removed from the engine to replace the camshaft:
- Cylinder head to remove the pushrods and valve lifters.
- Front cover.
- Spur gears.
- Fuel pump for carbureted vehicles.

Removing the engine is not necessary; after removing the radiator, the camshaft can be replaced on all classic Volvo cars.

The following principles must be observed when installing a new camshaft:
- The valve lifters must also be replaced.
- The cams and valve lifters must be lubricated with assembly paste (run-in paste), item number 1014853.

Caution! Important note regarding the installation of the camshaft nut:
Volvo previously specified a tightening torque of 13-15 kpm for the camshaft nut. This can cause the threaded stud on replica camshafts to crack. A tightening torque of 80 Nm should not be exceeded. For safety reasons, Loctite threadlocker should also be used.

Tips:
- When removing the front cover, the oil pan gasket in this area is almost always damaged. A repair piece can be removed from the new gasket. Order a new oil pan gasket (Skandix 1000179).

- While you're at it, upgrade to a front cover with an oil seal (Skandix 1067877).

- Check the camshaft bearings in the block. The first bearing is usually worn. This can also be replaced without removing the engine.
