Spicer- Axle: Differential housing is covered by a tin lid.

ENV Axle: The Differential is stuck into the axle housing from the front.

Spicer Type M27: The Drive shaft pipes have an outer diameter of 57mm, M30 has 63,5mm pipes.

The transmission ratio is noted on a flag at the differential lid or noted on a plate at the bottom of the axle at later types.

The optimal rear axle ratio for a Volvo P1800 with an overdrive transmission (typically M41) depends on how you plan to use the car—whether you prefer a sporty driving style or want to cruise comfortably over long distances. Standard gear ratios:
Volvo typically installed a 4.56:1 or later a 4.10:1 axle ratio on the P1800 with overdrive, depending on the year of manufacture:
• Early models (up to around 1969): usually 4.56:1
• Later models (from around 1970 with B20 engine): often 4.10:1

• With overdrive, the gear multiplier of approximately 0.79:1 results in an effective "long-distance" gear ratio.

Recommendations depending on the intended use:

Touring / Long-distance 3.73:1 or 3.90:1 Lower revs at 100-120 km/h, more comfortable on the highway

Original 4.10:1 Best mix of power and comfort, especially with overdrive

Personal tip:

If you regularly drive cross-country or on the highway and have the overdrive, a 3.90:1 or even 3.73:1 rear axle is a very pleasant compromise. This allows the engine to run nicely and smoothly at 120 km/h without losing much elasticity in the lower range.

If you prefer a sportier ride or don't have the overdrive, stick with 4.10:1 or 4.56:1.
