Overhauling the rear axle on the Volvo S40 and V40

24.10.2025

The first S40 and V40 (-2004) were a milestone in design for Volvo. It was the first model in decades that was not emphatically angular. The pronounced waistline, as seen in the 240, was to become a distinguishing feature of subsequent Volvo model generations—right up to the present day.

Developed in collaboration with Mitsubishi and built in the Netherlands, these vehicles were significantly more popular than their predecessors, which was also reflected in the sales figures. In Germany, the V40, which competed with the compact lifestyle station wagons from Audi and BMW, sold particularly well.

The fact that the S40 and V40 were significantly more complex in design than their predecessors is not only evident in the new four-valve engines. The adjustable multi-link rear axle is also a rather complex design for track and camber stability. At the time, most of the front-wheel-drive competition was still driving around with twist-beam rear axles.

Many of the sophisticated details are now proving to be the downfall of the model series: after discontinuing the series in 2004, the vehicle manufacturer did not continue its collaboration with Mitsubishi, and many spare parts are no longer available. As a result, it is almost impossible to obtain parts for the rear axle from authorized dealers. This situation has been a concern for us for some time, as the aftermarket also has very little to offer for this model series. We were able to source some parts in the Far East due to the model's similarity to the Mitsubishi Charisma, while other parts had to be reproduced on our own. Recently, we had the eccentric discs for the rear axle adjustment screws reproduced. These are often so rusty that, like the corresponding screws, they can hardly be removed from the bushings, making it impossible to adjust the camber of the rear axle.

But bushings, control arms, and other parts are also hardly available in Europe, and we distribute many of them exclusively. A complete overhaul of the rear axle is still possible; we have just successfully implemented it.

So if you have a problem with your S40 or V40, take a look in our shop. Or give us a call. Enclosed you will find a list of parts for the rear axle.
