New D-Jetronic fuel pressure regulator

22.11.2024

The D-Jetronic in the Volvo P1800E, ES, 140 and 164 relies on a precisely set fuel pressure for proper operation. This first electronic fuel injection system debuted in 1967 in the VW 1600 and was installed in many vehicles from other manufacturers in the following years, including Mercedes, Citröen, Opel, Alpine, Porsche, Saab and BMW. From about the mid-seventies, D-Jetronic was then gradually replaced by the K- and L-Jetronic systems.

In most vehicles, the fuel pressure of the D-Jetronic is set to 2.0 bar by the pressure regulator; for a time, Volvo had an instruction to set it to 2.1 bar. The fuel pressure should be checked regularly for proper functioning of the injection and a long engine life, and readjusted if necessary. Too low a fuel pressure can lead to engine damage in the long run.

Now the fuel pressure regulators, like other D-Jetronic parts, have been in short supply for years and have been replaced by the manufacturer from time to time with other variants. This is not a problem for the pressure regulators, thanks to the fact that the adjustment range is always relatively the same; only two connection variants should always be available. In the recent past, however, almost nothing was available.

Because we know how important it is for the system to work perfectly and because we occasionally need a new pressure regulator ourselves, we looked around for a suitable manufacturer. We found what we were looking for and, of course, installed the prototype in a P1800ES. We set the pressure to 2 bar and tested it, and the car runs perfectly.

The fuel pressure regulators are now available in our shop under the numbers 1071886 and 1061995. As already mentioned, they can also be used in BMW, Mercedes, Opel and other vehicles with D-Jetronic.

Finally, a tip from our own experience:

If the pressure regulator is defective, it may be because the pump pressure is too high. Occasionally, fuel pumps with excessive pressures for the D-Jetronic were sold, sometimes with over six bar working pressure. An original pressure regulator cannot withstand this for too long, as it is designed for the load of a pump with 2.5 - 3 bar. If you need a new pressure regulator, we strongly recommend measuring the working pressure of the installed pump. If the pressure is in the range of over 4 bar, replacement with a more suitable pump is strongly advised.
