Ignition distributor repair in Volvo 700 and 900 made easy

12.09.2025

The distributors of the four-cylinder engines in the Volvo 700 and 900, which are driven by the camshaft, tend to develop the well-known problem of oil leaks as they age. This occurs both under the distributor cap and outside it. Neither drops under the car nor the occasional stray spark are pleasant in the long run. In most cases, the main culprit is the shaft seal for the distributor shaft in the bottom of the ignition distributor. Engine oil then runs into the distributor, causing sparks to jump and then continuing on toward the floor via the clutch bell. In the distributor, there are Pertinax washers between the adjustment washers for the axial play, which are intended to reduce friction. These are also often broken or no longer there, which can result in axial play of several millimeters. This also causes unclean ignition sparks.

For this reason, we have long offered repair kit 1027507 for the distributor, which contains everything you need for the repair.

Bosch also still has the ignition distributor in its range as a replacement part, but it has become quite expensive.

When it was time to seal the distributor of our own car, we noticed that we were all doing it with homemade devices. There are also no instructions anywhere on how to do it. The vehicle manufacturer has always only offered complete distributors.

The only problem is actually the pin through the distributor shaft and the driver: it is quite tight and has to be driven out with a little force and feeling. The driver and shaft should be supported so that they cannot be destroyed or bent.

So we took the opportunity to think about it and measure the dismantled distributor. The result is our clamping tool 1103076, which is screwed to the distributor and clamped in a vice, enabling the pin to be driven out without causing any damage.
All you need in addition is a vice, a drift punch, a hammer, and a pressure piece that fits the shaft seal, such as a suitable socket. In other words, only items that should be available in even the most basic hobby workshop. We have created instructions for sealing the distributor and linked them below.

To ensure that your distributor repair is successful, the clamping tool is now available in our shop under the number 1103076.
