Fuel Tank and Fill Hose for the Volvo P1800

The fuel tank is—especially today—a component that’s subjected to considerable stress. At least when it’s made of traditional sheet steel. Modern fuels containing ethanol undergo chemical changes over time. This leads to all sorts of undesirable effects, ranging from water buildup and corrosive components to bacterial growth inside the tank. Sticky residues settle, paint or coatings are dissolved, and corrosion is accelerated. Naturally, this takes a particularly heavy toll on classic cars, which are often left idle for long periods.
We’ve been aware of these issues for quite some time, of course. Furthermore, a fuel tank exposed beneath the car is naturally subject to environmental factors and tends to rust through after thirty years or more.
We’ve actually had a reproduction tank for the P1800 in our lineup for some time now, which—with the included accessories—can be universally adapted to all variants. That wasn’t the ideal solution for us, so we’ve now had two variants—one for carburetor models and one for fuel-injected models—reproduced based on the original design. This simplifies installation and eliminates the need to run additional lines or fittings.
Plus: It looks exactly like the original.
However, here’s something that can still happen during tank installation: The new tank is installed, along with a restored filler neck. And it leaks during the first test run.
The old connection between the two parts—usually a short hose, as shown here—was reinstalled due to a lack of a suitable replacement and simply can’t be made leak-tight anymore. Even new clamps won’t help the brittle hose. In fact, they usually just cause even more damage.
We know this all too well from our own experience and have such parts remanufactured when there’s sufficient demand. Hoses aren’t an overly complicated project. The prerequisite is always a sample that actually serves its purpose. This is often where the problem lies—what good is such a part if it doesn’t fit in the end?
For the 1970–1971 P1800E, we were able to track down a like-new sample; this fuel filler hose is now available new, with a perfect fit and in high quality.
The new fuel tanks for the P1800 are now available in the shop under the part numbers 1072897 (fuel-injected engines) and 1072898 (carbureted engines).
To ensure that the fuel tank installation goes smoothly, the new fill hose 1045077 is now available in the shop.
