Brake discs, brake drums like original

17.12.2018

The brake drum and brake discs for our Volvo classic cars are nowadays produced in different versions. We give you an overview of the most important differences:

A one-piece variant is available in which the hub and drum or disc are made from one cast part. With this design, the rear brake drums are not suitable for sports use due to the cast hub.

In contrast, the Volvo original brake drums and brake discs consist of several parts, as it was originally installed ex works. Also the SKANDIX brake drums and brake discs manufactured by us correspond in construction and quality exactly to the Volvo original.

Properties / advantages:

  • For the multi-part version, a new cast iron drum or brake disc is mounted on a new steel hub. After pressing together, the drum or disc is turned to the desired dimension and can be used immediately.
  • This also makes it possible for workshops and specialists to rebuild the wheel hubs with new drums or discs after reaching the wear limit.
  • In contrast to the one-part cast iron design, the steel hub used here is more durable and more resistant to load. These parts are therefore also suitable for sports use without restrictions.

Maintenance and cleaning:

Check the wear of the brake drums regularly. Brake drums which have been ground too thinly can burst during emergency braking! This is due to construction and applies irrespective of the quality of the brake drum version.

Measuring used drums can be difficult due to the edge formation caused by wear. If in doubt, replace the drum as a precaution.
According to Volvo's regulations, machining out brake drums with hollow grinding, scoring or cracked surfaces is not permitted.

Tip: Remove brake drums regularly and clean the inside of the brake system to prevent premature scoring by e.g. foreign objects.
