Oil return line turbocharger for Volvo 700 and 900
09.08.2024Most car owners only become aware of the existence of the turbocharger's oil return line when it starts to leak.
A turbocharger is usually mounted between the manifold and the flame tube, so it cannot be supplied with the vital lubricant directly from the engine block. The turbocharger needs this to lubricate and cool the shaft, even with a water-cooled turbocharger, as is the case here.
For this reason, there is usually a pressure line from the engine block to the supercharger and a return line from this to the oil pan.
In the Volvo 740 and 940, this is a very solidly designed rigid pipe, which is also generously dimensioned. Failures due to leaking hose components, as with other vehicle manufacturers, are not to be feared here.
Nevertheless, it is occasionally defective, usually due to stress cracks or improper installation. After all, the tube has to be dismantled when replacing the cylinder head gasket, manifold or turbocharger. It can happen that the pipe has been dismantled three times in thirty years. Corrosion damage to the return line is very rare; it is usually well oiled during the somewhat impractical oil filter change.
The part was discontinued by the vehicle manufacturer last year. We immediately ordered a replacement, as it is impossible to operate the turbocharger without the oil pipe.
The turbocharger return oil pipe is now available in our store under the number 1023753.
