Throttle cable

Volvo 960, S90 (-98), V90 (-98)

Instructions for installing the throttle cable on the Volvo 960.

Remove the throttle valve cover.

Remove the floor panelling, three screws and one plug. Simply turn the plug through 90°.

Unhook the throttle cable from the throttle roller by holding the throttle valve in a favourable position. In this case two throttle cables of different lengths can be installed. The throttle roller has two different bearing points for the cable.

Use a screwdriver to lever out the retaining clip of the bearing on the gas roll.

In automatic vehicles, the kickdown switch is integrated into the throttle cable on the engine compartment side of the firewall. Of course, the plug has to be disconnected and then reconnected afterwards. This throttle cable can of course also be used in cars with manual transmission, the plug then simply remains unused.

Pull the throttle cable at the top of the accelerator pedal with the clip out of the rubber grommet and unhook the cable from the clip. The clip is often a bit brittle and breaks when old, but as a precaution you should replace it if necessary (1034329).

Unscrew the accelerator together with the bracket.

If the throttle cable is not reused, tear off the rubber grommet in the floor area to get better access to the hooks of the throttle cable.

Now put a fairly slim 24 mm socket on a long extension and press the hooks together. Normally the cable can be pulled out from the engine compartment side, but the socket must be on the cable in order to keep the hooks pressed.

Now fold the grommet for the footwell side on the new throttle cable a little and secure it with a cable tie, this makes it easier to insert it into the chassis. When the throttle cable is inserted and locked in place, simply remove the cable tie from the footwell side.

Lay the throttle cable with a loop so that it is not in the way when checking the oil level or filling up the brake fluid, secure it at least at three points with cable ties or brackets. The remaining assembly is done in reverse order of disassembly. Finally, adjust the throttle cable so that it has no play in idle position. Tip: Silicone spray on the rubber parts and the adjustment thread makes the work easier.
