Threaded plate cardan shaft flange

Volvo 121, 140, P1800, PV, 200, 700

24.11.2021

The threaded plate for the propshaft flange replaces the nuts on the propshaft bolts. In addition to facilitating installation, especially on the Volvo PV, it also has other advantages such as better force distribution on the flange and a built-in anti-loosening device. Such a counter plate was available as an original part from Volvo in the early 60s for the PV and the Duett, but it was discontinued a long time ago. To loosen the cardan shaft flange in the standard configuration with bolt and nut, two 1/2" spanners must be used. This is somewhat awkward to work out, especially on the Volvo PV with its covered propshaft, due to the small cut-out. Socket or ratchet spanners cannot be used for reasons of space and the gearbox bearing is also in the way. So it can happen that when loosening or screwing on, one`s hands or the two spanners occasionally collide, there is simply no room.

Our threaded plate for the propshaft flange has the decisive advantage that only one spanner is needed: Simply place both screws with spring washers and screw them in as far as possible. Now you only need a spanner to tighten the last part of the thread. The second screw now does the counter-holding.

When fitting, the counter plate must always be placed on the flange side towards the gearbox, as shown in the picture. There is not enough space in front of the joint on the shaft side. Another big advantage of the threaded plate is that the force distribution on the flange is much more even. This makes it the stronger solution for historic motorsport or tuned vehicles.
