Tank Strap

01.12.2021Note on the professional installation of the often corrosion-damaged tank straps. To replace the straps, empty the tank as close as possible.
After jacking up or lifting the vehicle, support the tank flat with suitable tools.
Here on the lift we took a gearbox jack with a big wooden block. Do not use sharp edged tools! If the vehicle is jacked up and the tank is supported by a jack and pad, work can be done without a lift.
Apply rust remover to the mounting screws, they are frequently rusted.
Then put a 10mm socket on a long extension (250mm is optimal) and loosen the screw with some hammer blows.
Only then unscrew them.
Change one strap after the other completely, never remove both at the same time. Replace the rustier one first!
Remove old tank strap, install new one. Now first put the screw on the side in driving direction of travel, then on the front side. Do not tighten yet.
To attach again use extension and socket, this is the easiest way. Always use new screws, the screw head must have a collar.
Do not tighten both screws until they have been set.
Check wether nothing was trapped or forgotten. The hose under the strap in this picture should run over the strap.
Remove the support only when all screws are tightened.
As described, the exchange takes a maximum of one hour. But due to rust, please be carefully!
