Sensor rear parking assistant

Saab 9-5 (-10)

24.11.2021

Notes on diagnosis, localization and replacement of defective PDC sensors. The procedure described here is not the same for all 9-5 models, in some cases it is easier to remove the cover on later models and on the Sedan models. The screws on the back are only available for station wagons up to 2006. The car shown is a Saab 9-5 station wagon from model year 2004.

Errors in the parking assistant can be localised most easily with a diagnostic device.

We have used the proven GM-Tech2 with the corresponding Saab software for this purpose, which can read all control units of these series. This diagnostic device tells the user immediately which of the sensors is defective or does not communicate with the control unit.

It is a common problem of simple OBD-2 readers not to communicate with all devices.

To get to the sensors, the upper panel of the rear bumper must be removed.

To do this, first unscrew the four screws on top of the inner side of the bumper support from below.

Then pull the tailgate seal out of its seat at the lower edge and next to the tail lights.

Then release and remove the covers next to the rear lights by turning the two latches by 90°.

Clip out the two outer bumpers inside and pull them slightly away from the bumper. A complete disassembly is not necessary.

Now pull the top cover back. Attention, the outside of the cover is still guided of the bumper skin.

If you can get to the corresponding sensor sensor without disassembling the strip completely, you can now clip it out. Disconnect the plug to avoid breaking or overstretching the cables.

To disassemble the cover completely, you have to pull it backwards quite strong, because the inner retaining straps have to bend. As long as this is not done at too low temperatures, they will not break off.

With the error message "No communication", the wiring harness and the connectors should also be checked.

Due to the not particularly protected multi-connector at the left end of the bumper bracket, as well as at the removed sensors, you can check the system completely with a multimeter when the cover is removed.

Cable breaks and contact problems due to corrosion are more common due to the design. The use of contact cleaner and contact spray have often led to success in this case.

As a test, it is worthwhile to plug in all sensors once before reassembly and test whether a fault continues to occur.

Reassembly is then carried out in reverse order. The retaining lugs for the screws on the inside must be bent and point forward when the cover is pressed in, so that they slide back into position on the inside.
