Replacing the door lock Volvo PV

22.03.2023

Small installation guide for replacing the door lock on a Volvo PV

When the door locks on a Volvo PV are really worn, the latches point clearly downwards. Among connoisseurs, this is an unmistakable sign that this car has already done a bit of running.

The door handle and the door locks are available as new reproductions, as are various installation accessories. However, the slot for the handle in the lock with this original part must often be reworked so that the square of the handle also fits.

It is mandatory to check the accuracy of fit of the square bushing before installing the lock, because reworking the installed lock is no longer possible.

The guide for the latch attached above the screws of the lock must be unscrewed first so that the screws can be reached properly.

The cotter pin of the door handle can be pulled out at this point, which must of course be dismantled before removal.

A little further down, hidden under the door seal, is the screw of the lock cylinder. This must also be pulled out before disassembly.

To remove the door trim, the window crank and the door opener must be removed by knocking out a small pin. Then unscrew the closing handle and carefully lever off the door trim. The screws of the pull handle must not be lost, they are very special trapezoidal thread screws!

The last screw of the door lock is hidden on the inside of the door a little above the latch under the door trim, this must of course also be unscrewed.

The actuation rod from the interior opener to the lock, which was riveted in its original state, cannot be unhooked like on modern vehicles.

The lock must therefore always be removed from the door together with the interior opener. This is screwed on with three screws under the door trim.

After the slightly fiddly removal of the lock including opener: The rivet of the pull rod has to be drilled off.

This is quite easy to do, assuming you have a sharp HSS drill. To make the connection to the new lock, not everyone has the tools suitable for solid steel rivets in the house, as these are almost extinct today.

A simple and pragmatic solution: cut a suitable thread in the rod of the new lock and drill out the pull rod accordingly.

Then screw the drawbar to the lock with a screw and washer and plenty of high-strength threadlocker so that the drawbar can just be moved.

The Reassembly is done in reverse order. Unfortunately, the door locks currently produced by the vehicle manufacturer often have the handle pointing downwards when new. Not as much as with a completely worn-out one, but not as much as with a new original part from the sixties. Originally, the handle was always horizontal and parallel to the trim when new.
