Replacement spring core, seat upholstery front seat

16.01.2024

installation information for the spring core of the front seats - shown here on a PV544 seat. The spring cores become weak and worn after 50-70 years and are often repaired badly and thus the seat always feels worn and tired. We show you how to install the new spring core to your seat and be able to drive comfortably again.

Remove the seat from the car and take off the backrest. Use a clean workbench or table that will not harm your seat.
Clearly visible on this seating surface: The one-sided wear of the original spring core.

Cut and remove all present upholstery staples on the underside of the seat. Unhook the seat cover bows on the bottom side too.

When everything is unhooked and loose, take off the seat cover carefully without stressing the corners too much.

Now take off the seat cushion very carefully. It is made from coconut fibre and will be reused since it is not available new. If the seat cushion is very worn though, it is possible to restore its shape with an extra layer of foam, but in most cases the cushion will be reusable without any extra work.

In this picture: All parts of the seating surface, rightmost the new spring core.

When seats are that old, chances are high that you will find previous repairs like these extra springs and wires, but that is not a proper way of repairing your seat! Sharp wires will work their way through the seat cushion and cover over time, it will not be a nice experience to sit on such a seat. Even worse: If the frame of the spring core broke, the seat cushion and cover will be damaged very quickly.

Clearly visible in this picture: The uneven wear of the springs on ode side of the spring core - impossible to sit down here comfortably!

First fitting of the new spring core to the seat undercarriage. The spring core is held to the undercarriage only by the seat cover. The seat cover presses the seat cushion on the spring core and is fastened to the lower frame with upholstery staples.

Now the seat cushion has to be put on and over the new spring core.

To protect the seat cover against sharp edges, we make a piece of foam for the rear side of the seating surface.

This foam strip is now attached to the rear side with upholstery glue.

Apply the glue and let it flash off a bit.

Now we attach the foam strip to the rear seat edge.

After that the lining is pulled over the foam.

Pull the seat cover over the seat cushion, spring core and lower frame. You may have to pull firmly.

Now the seat cover bows are pushed back into their seats and have to be fastened tight with upholstery staples.

Make sure the seat cover bow wire is always inside the upholstery staples, so that the wire is encapsulated by the staples and thus attached to the spring core firmly. Reuse the old holes in the seat cover, if they are not torn out.

The result is very good: The seating surface is tight and straight again, you can sit healthy and upright again in your Volvo!
