Replace speedometer cover set
17.01.2025Temperature fluctuations with regular use will affect the paintwork over the years. UV light penetrating the cockpit favours flaking of the paint on the speedometer cover. Only a few models, often garage vehicles with only a few kilometres on the clock, are still among the undamaged models.
There is now a solution for all those whose paintwork is already starting to peel.

As can be seen in the initial picture, the paintwork on the speedometer cover has almost completely peeled off over the years and the brass plate is coming out.

A direct comparison of both apertures.

All the necessary tools at a glance.

Firstly, the decorative frame of the speedometer is carefully levered open at the recesses on the back using a flat-blade screwdriver/plastic wedge.

The speedometer housing is now separated from the decorative frame element.

The following screws are now loosened and set aside.

Remove the protective film from the speed scale and then fit a spacer sleeve and a longer screw on both sides.

Before fitting, remove the dust from the speedometer and windscreen using a microfibre cloth and a brush. Now place the new scale on the speedometer housing, align it and then carefully tighten the screws.

Control the correct position by alternating the tightening of internal and external screws.

The scale fits!

Now insert the sleeves for the light sources.

The light windows for the indicator lights are now required. To do this, separate the old speedometer scale from the cover and cut off the melting points all round with a flat scalpel.

The scale is separate from the aperture.

Continue with the rubber sleeves. Remove these with the scalpel as well.

Now the indicator lamp windows come out.

Now carefully cut off the protruding collar of the fused light windows.

The separated elements have a unique fit.

Position the light windows in the correct order (!) on the new cover.

Secure the windows with masking tape to prevent them from falling out when turned over.

All windows are fixed.

Fix the light windows 4-times with the UHU-GEL adhesive. The viscosity of the adhesive is important here, as it not only ensures an optimum hold, but also prevents the adhesive from flowing onto the front of the panel. Consider the drying times and remove the masking tape without leaving any residue.

The interim result is already impressive. Position the finished panel in the speedometer housing.

Position the chrome trim frame precisely and fix it at the sides of the recesses provided by gently pressing it down with a flat-blade screwdriver/plastic wedge.

The refurbished speedometer is ready!
