Repair kit inner tailgate cover

Volvo 700, 900, V90 (-1998)

24.11.2021

Simple solution for repairing the often broken eyelets for the retaining clips on the lower edge of the tailgate trim on Volvo 740, 760, 940, 960 and V90 estate models.

This is how the lower edge of a dismantled tailgate trim should look on a 940. In the centre of the picture, one of the four retaining eyes with which the underside of the trim is attached to the tailgate.

Due to bad treatment or sometimes simply due to brittle plastic, it often looks like that. When individual clips no longer work, the cover does not fall off immediately, but it rattles. The force on the remaining retaining eyelets obviously increases.

Our repair kit solves exactly this problem. It contains four stainless steel plates to replace the retaining lugs. The two outer ends with the 3.5 mm holes must be angled to the lower end of the cut and then form the retaining lugs for riveting to the panel.

These retaining straps must be angled by approx. 80 degrees, it is best to check the angle by stopping at the panel.

When the angle is correct, hold the sheet and drill the first rivet hole in the bottom of the panel. Deburr a little with the cutter knife and rivet the first rivet. The hole diameter for 3.2mm rivets should be 3.5mm.

Only then drill the second hole and rivet it. If you drill both holes at once, the sheet metal will almost always be slightly warped after the first rivet and the second hole will no longer fit. It is better, as described, to rivet one side first and then drill the second.

Once all the broken tabs have been repaired, the cover can be refitted with the original clips. Now nothing rattles anymore!
