Repair: Center console latch Volvo 960/II and S/V90

Volvo 960 (95-), S90(-98), V90 (-98)

31.01.2024

The locking lever of the Volvo 960/II and V90 center console tends to break due to the age. Normally the lever snaps off directly at the hinge, since the plastic became brittle. In this manual we show you how to repair it - it is not that complex, but you have to take care of a few details. Generally repairs on old plastic parts should not be done in cold weather, the risk of them breaking something is too high!

To install the new locking lever you should take off the cover of the center console. Unscrew the two screws at the hinge and take off the cover. Repairing the locking mechanism with the cover installed would be unnecessary complex, it is better to repair the cover on the workbench.

Pull out the cup holder to the stop. The stops are also the retaining lugs of the cup holder, you can see them, when you shine a light inside the slot from the top. To pull out the insert completely, the retaining lugs have to be pushed to the top with a screwdriver. It is also possible to pull down the bottom of the housing as shown in the picture.

Turn the armrest cover upside down and drive out the bearing pin with a long punch (2.5-3mm diameter). Keep an eye on the spring, since it will fly away when you pull out the punch, hold the spring down to prevent this.
Push the pin inside the new lever and make sure it is easily possible to push it through the lever, if not you have to ream the hole to 3mm diameter.

Now push through the first hole and put the spring into its guide in the cover. Also push the spring in its guide on the lever.

Now push the pin through the hole in the new lever, take care the pin is pushed through the the center of the spring and will not be next to the spring. This might be a bit fiddly, since the spring does not want to stay in place. Push the pin through the center of the spring into the second bearing hole in the new lever and further, until the pin will slide into the hole in the cover. Pushing the pin will be possible without tools, only for the last three millimeters you might need a hammer and a small punch. It is important to push in the knurl of the pin in completely, otherwise it might come off later.
Lubricate with silicone spray.

Now the repair is done. Push the cup holder back in place and reinstall the cover in your car. Now the cover will lock properly again and will not rattle anymore.
