Renew D5 swirl flap joint

In the following you can see how the joint of the swirl flap (the connection between actuator and swirl damper) is renewed. The car shown is a 2007 XC70 D5. The manual refers to the newer version of the swirl flap, where there is no ball head at the joint anymore.


A noticeable loss of Power occurs and at the Display shows the warning message "Engine System Service Required".


Dismantle the engine cover. Lift up the cover near the oil dipstick and pull it to the front.


The joint hast detached itself from the swirl flap shaft. The shaft is no longer actuated and the vehicle therefore sets an error.


Dismantle the old joint from the actuator servo.

Using a big screwdriver is recommended. Push the joint off the ball head by inserting the screwdriver between the parts and turn 180 degrees.


Now push the new joint to the ball heads starting at the swirl flap shaft.

Then check whether the joint is firmly seated on the ball head and whether the swirl flap is smooth-running. The joint must not sit too loosely on the ball head, otherwise there is a danger that it will come loose again during driving. If the clearance is too large, the swirl flap must be replaced because the ball head on the shaft is not available separately.


Then push the joint to the actuator servo in the front.

Hold the actuator from behind and push the joint on the ball head - this is very easy with thumb and index finger.
