Installation / Adjustment new SU HS6 to original Volvo carburetor linkage
09.11.2023Classic Volvos with SU HS6 twin carburetors have their own type of throttle lever with an 8.2mm hole suitable for the 8mm diameter of the original Volvo throttle linkage. Differing from this, SU always delivered the carburetors with a 7,62mm hole. Since the original Volvo throttle lever is no longer available, we will show you in this manual how to adapt your new SU carbs to the original throttle linkage.
At first loosen the nut on the throttle shaft, that is holding down the choke lever and the throttle shaft stop. The nut is secured with a thin locking plate that bends away when you loosen the nut with gentle force.
Remove the throttle valve in fully opened position.
Unscrew the nut that is holding down the choke lever and throttle stop. Loosen both levers with careful punches on the throttle shaft and take the levers off. Then completely drive out the throttle shaft. Only use a plastic hammer for this!
Now the throttle lever has to be separated from the throttle shaft. First drive out the locking pin.
To drive out the pin, clamp down the throttle lever in a vice in a way you can easily reach the pin with a thin punch. Never clamp the throttle shaft itself!
When the pin is removed, the throttle shaft can be driven out of the throttle lever. Lay down the throttle lever on the vice in a way, you are able to drive out the throttle shaft without damaging it.
The punch you are using must be as close to the diameter of the throttle shaft as possible and must have a smooth surface. Too small and/or worn punches will damage the shaft quickly.
After drilling, deburr and clean the lever with compressed air.
Again: Only use a plastic hammer for this process!
Make sure the bores for the locking pin align.
Hold the locking pin with thin pliers, since it`s hard to hold the little pin with your fingers. To do this, clamp the throttle lever as shown in this picture.
When the pin is positioned correctly, unclamp lever and shaft from the vice and drive in the locking pin completely.
Insert the throttle shaft back into the carburetor.
Put on the choke lever, the throttle stop and the locking plate back in the correct position.
Tighten the nut and bend over the locking plate.
Insert the throttle valve back into its seat in the shaft.
To determine the correct position for the throttle valve, it has to be shut.
Last step before installing the new carburetors: Make sure the throttle linkage is seated properly in the throttle levers.
