Fuse box

Volvo 200

26.11.2021

Installation instructions for our new fuse holder, which at the same time replaces the old torpedo fuses with the modern, more reliable flat plug fuses type "ATO", thus making the electrical system much more reliable. The old torpedo fuses are also often difficult to obtain because they have not been in a new car for over twenty years.

As with all electrical work, the battery must be disconnected first.

We have here the comfortable solution of a battery main switch (Skandix 1015583) and only need to switch it off.

To replace the fuse holder, the panel on the left side of the footwell must be removed.

First remove the felt cover above the footwell under the dashboard. It is fixed with five rotating clips, three on the dashboard, two above the pedals. Simply turn them by 90° and then remove them, then pull the panel out towards the seat.

The left footwell panel above the fuse holder is held by a clip and is pushed under the door seal and the inside sill covering.

Remove the cover from the fuse holder and the clip located further back.

Remove the door seal from the edge over a length of about 40 cm. Pull off the top cover a little and then unscrew and remove it under the sill cover. The button of the canopy pull can be pressed inwards easily for this purpose.

In this picture the positions of the clips can be seen quite well on the removed panels.

The bar above the fuse holder prevents that you can pull out of the seat when the panels are mounted. Furthermore, the panels is in the way when the cables are replugged.

Now unscrew the fuse holder with the two screws from the A-pillar and remove any cable ties.

Replace the plugs one by one, fusing them from the old fuse holder to the new one.

An angled telephone pliers is quite helpful for this.

If only two of the three plugs are loaded, it is essential to pay attention to the position of the cables: The two outer contacts on the holder are bridged. If one would use these two, the fuse would have no function.

Now screw the fuse holder back on and fit new fuses according to the list in the cover.

If, as here, the fuses are not available as flat fuses for the same amperage, choose the next smaller one. For example, instead of 8A use a flat fuse in 7.5A. Under no circumstances should these be fused higher.

If the list in the cover is no longer available, consult the appropriate logbook or a circuit diagram suitable for the year of construction. The fuse dimension is decisive for its fuse function!

If necessary, secure the wiring harness in its position with cable ties so that it cannot rub anywhere.

Afterwards, everything can be reassembled in reverse order, but a functional test of the consumers should be carried out before mounting the panels.
