Electrical antenna

Volvo 200, 700, 900, 850, S70, S90 (-98)

Instructions for replacing or retrofitting an electric antenna in older Volvo models, using an 850 saloon as an example.

As with the 850 here, the first step is to unclip the boot panel on the antenna side. Be aware that the clips may be damaged due to their design, so they should be purchased as a fallback.

If the electrical antenna is retrofitted: On many younger Volvos from about 1990 onwards, the connection for the electrical antenna is already pre-assembled. On the 850, it is located on the wiring duct directly below the antenna entry and is covered with a plastic cap. If the connector is not there, an ignition plus, minus and the control line from the radio must be routed there. In this case, the battery should be disconnected before starting work.

Pull out the antenna plug of the old antenna; if an electrical antenna is present, also pull out the plug of the power supply and control. Loosen the upper nut of the antenna and, if present, unscrew the locking plate from the lower part of the body. Now the old antenna can be removed.

Screw the new antenna to the reinforcement plate, insert it and fasten it only with the collar nut. If the angle of the antenna is correct, determine a suitable position for fastening the reinforcing plate and bend it accordingly. If necessary, remove the antenna again or unscrew the plate so as not to damage the antenna. Caution: When unscrewing the nut from the new antenna, the guide sleeve must not slip out. A missing guide sleeve leads to malfunctions and the antenna would then wobble.

Drill and deburr the hole for fixing the reinforcement plate.

Carefully vacuum out chips from the boot and seal the hole.

After screwing on the reinforcement plate, seal the hole again, for example with cavity wax.

If the antenna is now correctly positioned, fix the cables properly with cable ties. Connect the hose for the water drainage and lay it outside. If there is no hole, you can often lead it through the boot ventilation.

When the antenna is raised, it must not touch the boot lid when it is opened. This should be checked before the first use. Refit the boot trim correctly and the new antenna can provide good radio signal for a long time!

The original electric antennas were available in different formats, here in the picture an original one from a 1997 S70 (below) and above it our item number 1079569. The shorter format is due to the number of links. The upper one has five links, the lower one three. When extended, the rods are about the same length. Despite the difference in length, the original hole can be used for the lower attachment with the enclosed perforated plate.

The water drainage hose is of course too short and must be replaced, the silicone vacuum hose 1021959 is well suited for this, it fits on the antenna and the original grommet.

The sleeve is then guided back through the original body opening.
