Diesel fuel filter
17.06.2026This work instruction was created based on the Volvo XC60 up to model year 2017. Procedures may differ for other vehicle models, particularly with regard to the required fuel level remaining in the tank.
Before starting work, ensure that the work area is well ventilated. Fuel is highly flammable. Open flames and ignition sources must be strictly avoided.
Important:
• At least 10 liters (2.6 US gal) of fuel should remain in the tank to ensure proper bleeding of the fuel system.
• Depending on the fuel level in the tank, a sufficiently large drain pan must be placed beneath the filter housing before opening it. As a general rule, the fuel tank should never be more than three-quarters full.
• The condensate drain is fitted with two seals and should be replaced.
• If the diesel filter housing is cracked, it must be replaced completely. Failure to do so may result in vehicle breakdowns and environmental contamination.
Warning: Ensure that any escaping fuel is completely collected. Before loosening the drain screw, a suitable collection container must be positioned underneath the filter.
The drain screw of the fuel filter, also known as the condensate drain, is carefully loosened to allow the fuel to drain in a controlled manner. After draining, the drain screw is reinstalled and tightened to the specified torque (2 Nm). After reassembly, the drain screw must be checked for leaks and replaced if necessary.
The fuel filter is then loosened using special tool 1018905. The illustration shows the correct positioning of the tool on the filter housing. Unscrew the filter cover completely and remove it together with the filter element, keeping the element facing downward. Some residual fuel may still escape during removal and must also be collected.
Install the new seal in the filter housing after lightly lubricating it with oil. Also lightly lubricate the threads of the filter housing with diesel fuel.
Position the new fuel filter together with the cover by hand. Then tighten the filter using the special tool.
Attention: Do not forget to lubricate the seal and threads. Otherwise, the housing can usually not be opened again without damage during the next service.Tightening torque for the fuel filter cover: 25 Nm.
After installing the new fuel filter, the fuel system must be bled. To do this, switch the ignition on several times without starting the engine.
Turn the ignition on three times for approximately ten seconds each. This allows fuel to be pumped into the system and fills the new filter.Finally, check the fuel filter for leaks. The vehicle may only be started and returned to service once no leaks are detected.
