Clutch Replacement And Slave Cylinder Check

Saab 90, 99, 900

23.11.2021

These instructions have been created during the repair of a Saab 99 from 1984. For Saab 90 and 900 with 5-gear manual transmission the procedure is the same from step 5.

Take out the piston.

To separate the parts of the housing push its head down on the workbench.

Individual parts inspection.

The cylinder is damaged and can not be used anymore (beyond repair).

So we replace it with the later type.

remove the sealing, put the boot back in place and put on the release bearing.

The spring in the boot pushes the bearing up. Unfortunately Saab´s helpful tool is not longer available but skilled fingers will get it done.

Now install the new radial oil seal at the gearbox input.

You can use a nut of appropriate diameter, an extension and a tyre lever to insert the oil seal.

Here the machanic can set his creativity free.

In the end it should look like this.

Now we are going to prepare the new clutch.

The construction of the clutch may differ between the manufacturers.

Remove the tensioning ring from the old clutch.

Load the diaphragm spring with a press until you can easily take out the ring.

Do the same with the new clutch to insert the ring. Be careful not to damage the new clutch.

Just load the spring as far as necessary to insert the ring.

Clear the pressure plate from corrosion protection.

Completely degrease the flywheel as well.

Now it gets funny...the clutch and the slave cylinder can only be inserted together...

...which turns out to be not so easy...

...but it works!

Done. Now we can insert the clutch shaft and center the clutch disc this way.

After the shaft is fully installed you can screw on the pressure plate and slave cylinder.

Install the impeller (carefully!).

Remove the tesioning ring!

Install the service cover with a new seal and reassemble the car.

Bleed the clutch system.

Finished.
