09.12.2021Reconditioning the wing mirror with a defect at the motor or actuator. In this example at a volvo 940, but the hint applies similar to many other cars.
If the mirror glass of a power mirror is hanging loose or the motor won`t run, something is wrong with the actuator. We presume that the mirror glass is correctly sitting in it`s seat, sometimes not all retaining lugs are clipped in. In this case you can change the actuator only when the mirror housing is in good condition. You don`t have to change the whole power mirror. You don` need paintwork or dismantling of the door panel.
Mostly the actuator is a compact part with power unit and suspension.
The exchange is a simple procedure, here we show it at a Volvo 940.
At other cars it`s nearly the same or similar.
First you have to dismantle the mirror glass. Therefore adjust the mirror glass to the inside of the car. Take a wooden wedge or a trim tool for levering the mirror glass. Normally it would be easy, but sometimes the suspension ring of the actuator is clamping on the backside of the mirror glass. This is a result of the defect, then you have to use screwdrivers to lever the ring from the glass.
Don`t stress the glass punctually, it is easily broken.
If you have a heater in your mirror glass you also have to pull off the plugs from the back of the glass.
Now you can see the actuator which is fitted with the three phillips screws. Unscrew them with a little holding pressure and take off the actuator.
On the backside of the actuator is a triple pole plug. Lever the retaining lugs to the outside with two small screwdrivers and pull out the plug.
Don`t pull the plug at the wires, always pull the plug at it`s housing.
Now you can mount the new actuator, on the backside is a "top" marking, this must be showing to the topside. Push in the plug and then screw on the actuator. The remaining assembly occures in reserved order.
Don`t stress the mirror glass punctually while mounting it, it`s gonna be broken very easy!
A little bit of silicone spray may help you, the retaining lugs of the glass may be a bit tight.
