Volvo 900 (960), S90, V90

Hint about the position of the oil dipper rod and checking transmission fluid at a AW30/43.

At the Volvo 960 or S/V90 the oil dipper rod of the automatic transmission is a very hidden part. You won`t find it instantly.
Here you will have a hint for controlling the automatic transmission fluid.
Only make the controls at operating temperature of the transmission. Start the engine and go into the "N" position of the automatic.
Make sure that no dirt can get into the pipe of the dipper rod.

The oil dipper rod is in the encircled position at the lower end of the engine bay. You`ll find in a short pipe ending in the oil sump. It is also the oil filling plug.

On the upper end of the oil dipper rod is a 1/2" square drive, where you can use a suitable extension for a ratchet drill if the rod is glueing in the pipe. For unplugging the dipper rod you have turn it 45° in the pipe. Ther is a metal buttstrap, which is holding the dipper rod on the edge near the square drive.  If the buttstrap is on a corner of the square drive, you can pull the dipper rod. If the engine has operating temperature, use the "hot" marks on the rod for the right oil level.

In this picture you can see the extension for a ratchet drill in action, if you use it for turning the rod. At least you need 60cm of extensions if you want to check the oil  level comfortably from the upper side of the engine bay.
