Camshaft profile guide for your Volvo B18 / B20 engine:
A = Standard for engines with one carburettor (B18A / B20A).
C = Standard for engines with twin carburettors (B18B, B18D, B20B, B20D). Can also be used for moderate power increase in single carburettor engines.
D = Standard for injection engines without catalytic converter (B20E).
F = Camshafts for higher power at high rpm. Suitable for cars with sports carburetors, not for standard engines. Can also be used on B20E with adjustments to the fuel injection system. In contrast to the S-shaft still usable on road vehicles.
K = Standard for injection engines with catalytic converter (B20F). Optimal for performance increase in vehicles with original twin carburetor engine. Increases the torque at low rpm. Was originally also used in the R-Sport B18GT / B20GT kits.
R = Offers maximum torque at low rpm. Only for cars with sports carburettor, fan-type manifold, sports exhaust and machined cylinder head (stage 1 to 2).
S = Provides maximum power at high rpm. Maximum power at 6,500-7,000 rpm. Offers about 8-10hp more than the R-shaft, but less power at low rpm. Only for cars with sports carburettors, fan-type manifold, sports exhaust and machined cylinder head (at least stage 2). Not suitable for road vehicles, as high rpm must always be driven.
Service instructions:
The following assemblies must be removed from the engine to replace the camshaft:
- Cylinder head, in order to remove the pushrods and valve lifters.
- Front engine cover.
- Timing gears.
- Fuel pump on carburetor vehicles.
It is not necessary to remove the engine from the car, after removing the radiatorthe camshaft can be replaced on all Volvo classic cars on the car.
These basics must be considered during the installation of a new camshaft:
- The valve lifters must be replaced
- The cams and the valve lifters must be lubricated with mounting paste, item no. 1014853.
Volvo once gave a tightening torque of the camshaft nut of 13 to 15 kpm. When installing the threaded end could be stripped. A maximum torque of 80 Nm should not be exceeded. For additional security Loctite should be used.
Tips:
- When dismantling the front engine cover, the oil pan seal in this area is almost always damaged. A repair piece can be cut out of a new gasket. Order a new oil pan gasket (Skandix 1000179).
- At this opportunity, convert to a front cover with rubber radial shaft seal (Skandix 1067877).
- Inspect the camshaft bearings in the block. The first bearing is frequently worn out. This can also be replaced without removing the engine from the car.
