In compatible Volvo models equipped with an automatic transmission, a distinction is made between vehicles with and without "Shift-by-Wire."
Explanation:
- With Shift-by-Wire: The gear selector acts purely as an electronic signal transmitter. After being tapped, it always springs back to its original position. Gears are engaged via electrical impulses sent to actuators within the transmission.
- Without Shift-by-Wire (Mechanical): The vehicle features a physical connection (such as a cable or linkage) between the gear selector in the cabin and the transmission. The gear selector locks firmly into each respective position (P, R, N, D) and remains physically fixed in that spot.
