The world's woolliest Volvo
In a world full of shiny paintwork and aerodynamic spoilers, this car really stands out: a 2001 Volvo V40, lovingly and completely wrapped in colorful, hand-crocheted wool squares. What at first glance looks like the work of a knitting-mad grandmother is in fact an extraordinary charity project nicknamed “Gangster Granny.”
The vehicle was redesigned for the Bangers for Ben charity rally – an event where inexpensive used cars are transformed into bizarre works of art and money is raised for social causes. And “Gangster Granny” was right at the forefront.
The vehicle originally came in elegant “Peacock Green Metallic,” equipped with a beige leather interior and classic wood trim. But in 2024, Swedish restraint came to an end: the transformation began – from everyday car to mobile crochet bomb.
Every corner and curve of the bodywork was lovingly crocheted by hand. The result? A real eye-catcher that causes amazement in parking lots and makes people smile on the street. Even the radiator grille got a crocheted frame, and wool highlights flash here and there in the interior.
The highlight: the crocheted parts are permanently attached – nothing can be removed or washed off. This car is not a gimmick for an afternoon, but a real statement.
Despite its unusual appearance, the Volvo V40 is not a show car, but a genuine everyday vehicle. Underneath the crocheted exterior is a 1.9-litre engine with currently approx. 140,000 km on the clock, which runs quietly and reliably.
