Volvo PV544 - When it crashes in the gearbox

22.08.2016

Perhaps you have also experienced this: changing gears is accompanied by an unpleasant noise - the so-called "greeting from the gearbox". Shifting problems - the gear cannot be engaged cleanly. Usually the clutch does not disengage properly and the gears "crash" into each other.

If the clutch does not disengage properly, the fault does not always lie with the clutch itself. The clutch linkage is also subject to considerable wear and can be the cause of problems when changing gears. The clutch linkage provides the transmission between the clutch pedal and the release lever in the vehicle. This makes it an important part of the entire clutch mechanism.

Since it is not necessarily easy to see on the vehicle, we have juxtaposed an old worn clutch linkage with a new part to illustrate the point:

You can clearly see how badly worn the shaft is and how much play can add up throughout the actuator. This play can result in insufficient disengagement travel at the release fork to cleanly disengage the clutch.

If your linkage is also badly worn and the problem has no other significant cause, replacing the clutch linkage can minimise or even completely eliminate the shifting problems. Complete disassembly of the gearbox would thus be unnecessary.

For some time now, the crucial individual parts of the clutch transmission for the Volvo PV have been available as remanufactured parts.

Advantages:

  • A repair that an experienced mechanic can carry out himself
  • at best, disassembly of the gearbox and premature replacement of the clutch can be avoided
  • manageable costs
  • Restoration of the target condition

The parts are available for the Volvo PV544 and for the Volvo P210 Duett. See the following part numbers. A clutch shaft for the PV444 is in preparation.
