The Toppola turns the Saab into a small motorhome
30.09.2010The Toppola is a small living cabin for hatchback saloons.
Initially, the Toppola was only intended for the Saab 99, but custom-fit campers for the Saab 900, Saab 9000 and Saab 9-3 quickly followed. Not only Saab drivers enjoyed a Toppola - other models followed for the Ford Sierra and Ford Scorpio. The Toppolas were manufactured by the Swedish company Scando. Production of the Toppolas was discontinued in 2006.
The installation could be done in less than half an hour by experienced users. After removing the tailgate, the Toppola could be installed in the boot of the vehicle. Weighing about 115 kg, the Toppola was a relatively inexpensive way to convert a passenger car into a motorhome. Despite its compact design, it offered sleeping accommodation of about 1.7 by 2.0 metres. The sleeping berth extended approximately to the beginning of the vehicle's windscreen. Due to an interior height of 2 metres, one could comfortably stand in the living cabin. It was not uncommon for kitchens or heaters to be installed.
