Original ignition cassettes for Saab 9-3 and 9-5


The original ignition cassette (reference no. 55559955) for the Saab 9-3 and 9-5 was built in Sweden, but the company no longer makes them. However, all replicas known to us do not work as well as the originals from Sweden.

Our ignition cassette (Article no. 1004704) is still the original part from the original Swedish production of the original equipment manufacturer (NOS stock = New Old Sstock).

The background is that car engines do not have a camshaft sensor and the original ignition cartridge must be able to do more than just produce sparks. The range of functions is not comparable with normal individual ignition coils. The control unit recognises where the ignition timing must be via a voltage drop caused by the ionised gases during the first combustion. Similarly, the ignition sequence is also assigned, because during the first combustion the spark is applied to both cylinders located at the top in each case.

Without the necessary detectors in the ignition cassette, sequential knock control is not possible with the Trionic 7, because otherwise the camshaft sensor would be necessary.

As far as measurement technology and control are concerned, Saab was somewhat ahead of the times with this unconventional approach. The state of the ionised gases is a far more precise parameter than camshaft and knock sensors could measure.

The fact that a certain amount of effort was required in the production of the original ignition cassette is therefore self-explanatory. An effort that was obviously not made in the replicas known to us, which often leads to problems. As long as original ignition cassettes are still available, we strongly recommend installing them.

  • Saab 9-3 (-2003) with engines B205E, B205L, B205R, B235R
  • Saab 9-5 (-2010) all petrol engines, 4 cylinders
