New Oil Filter Connectors for Volvo 700 and 900

14.08.2026

On all Volvo 740 and 940 models, as well as Volvo 960 models from model year 1992 onward equipped with a turbocharged engine, the oil cooler is an oil-to-water heat exchanger. On the two-valve turbo models, it is installed between the oil filter and the oil filter flange.

The oil flowing through the filter is first heated slightly more quickly by the coolant at this point and then cooled slightly by it once it reaches operating temperature.

The oil cooler is secured to the oil filter flange using a slightly longer hollow screw as a connecting stud. The oil cooler is held in place at the rear of the hexagon, and the oil filter is then screwed onto it.

In this exact installation position, several components can suffer long-term damage over time:

First, there are the coolant hoses leading to the oil cooler, which inevitably get a light spray of oil every time the oil filter is changed. Over time, this causes the hoses to deteriorate if the used oil is not completely removed. The hoses leading to the oil cooler should be checked regularly during oil changes. Second, there is a risk of deforming the oil cooler if the oil filter is tightened too tightly.

The latter, in particular, poses a major risk: If the oil cooler is compressed too tightly, the hollow screw will no longer hold it properly. Then, theoretically, the hollow screw—along with the oil filter—could come loose while driving. A severe oil leak in a short period of time would be the dire consequence.

Our advice, should you ever need to remove your oil cooler: Carefully inspect the threads on the oil filter flange and the hollow screw, and install them exactly according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Using thread sealant or threadlocker provides additional security, but should only be done if the threads are spotlessly clean.

The hollow screw for the oil cooler—also known as a stud bolt or connecting stub—has been discontinued by the vehicle manufacturer without a replacement; we have therefore had it manufactured according to the original design. The hollow screw is now available in our shop under the part number 1073494.

Compatible with the following vehicles:
