High beam/low beam relay for Volvo 140, 164, 200, and P1800

The switch relay for the headlights in the late Volvo P1800, 140, 164, and 200 models is a somewhat special design. It actually consists of two relays that are connected in a special way. If you needed to replace this relay, which was usually installed on the inner fender, in recent years, you had to rely on used parts, as new ones had long since been discontinued. Alternatively, you had to laboriously cobble together a circuit from two standard relays, which of course was not possible without making changes to the vehicle's wiring harness. The circuit also posed a real challenge for many electrically-minded mechanics.

Anyone who has ever replaced such a part with a used part may also have stumbled across another peculiarity of this long-used part: at some point, the manufacturer moved the bracket on the housing to the other side of the cover.

Anyone who simply reconnects the wires without paying attention to the terminal labels because it appears to be the same relay risks a cable fire in the worst case.

In fact, the vehicle manufacturer has replaced this relay four or five times. It is therefore worth taking a close look to check the pin assignment.

Some vehicles also require an additional bridge. One of the original reference components already had this bridge integrated. Check whether this applies to your vehicle.

We have had a variant of this important relay reproduced. It can be used universally in all the vehicles mentioned. The bridge between terminals 15 and 81a, which may be necessary in 140 and 164, is always included with our relay.

In the P1800, this relay was also used for overdrive between 1965 and 1969.

The low beam relay is now available in our shop under the number 1016421.
