Halloween - A floating Saab 99

31.10.2025

Anyone who thinks Halloween is just about ghosts and witches has probably never seen a Saab 99 fly! But that's exactly what happened – in real life – in 1972 in Great Britain. A scene that looks like something out of a horror movie made headlines across the country at the time: a Saab 99, seemingly weightless, was hanging halfway in the air – impaled under a railway bridge.

However, the origin of this bizarre scene was anything but supernatural: a van driver had simply misjudged the clearance height. The result: the Saab 99 got spectacularly stuck under the bridge. It was an image that immediately captured the imagination – and would fit perfectly into any Halloween story.

But the story didn't end with a tow truck and some bodywork damage. On the contrary – the local Saab dealer sensed an opportunity and turned the accident into an event. The following weekend, he promptly put the “hanging Saab” on display in his showroom. Visitors were amazed to learn that, despite the enormous strain, the car's doors could still be opened and closed effortlessly. No warping, no distorted bodywork – true proof of Swedish engineering.

Whether coincidence, bad luck, or ingenious PR, the incident clearly demonstrated one thing: a Saab 99 is not easily shaken. And when someone asks you again on Halloween whether you believe in the supernatural, you can confidently reply, “I believe in floating Saabs!”
