Class Visit: A Design Classic Up Close – The Saab 900 at BBS1 Uelzen

Design can be taught in many ways—through images, models, or presentations. But sometimes there are those special moments when theory suddenly becomes tangible. One such moment occurred recently at BBS1 in Uelzen.
The students at the Technical College for Design were exploring the topic of design classics in class. While searching for an interesting object in a magazine on Scandinavian design, Paula came across a vehicle that immediately caught her attention: the Saab 900.
“I was instantly thrilled,” Paula says. “The shape, the details—it was just something special. I knew right away: this is what I want to give my presentation on.”
In class, the students were given the opportunity to bring their design objects—if possible—in person. An opportunity Paula wanted to take advantage of.
And so a presentation turned into a real-life experience:
Matthias from SKANDIX stopped by in person and brought a very special Saab with him: an original 1991 Saab 900 “Monte Carlo” convertible, equipped with the legendary B202L engine.
This meant the students could not only see the design but also experience it firsthand.
The clean lines, functional design, and the typical Scandinavian blend of aesthetics and engineering were immediately apparent on the vehicle. Particularly impressive was how timeless the Saab 900’s design appears—a true example of why it is considered a classic today.
The class quickly turned into a lively discussion about form, function, and brand identity. Questions were asked, details were discovered, and connections were understood that often remain abstract on paper.
In the end, one thing stood out above all else:
Good design endures for decades—and makes the greatest impact when experienced up close.
