Interview with Gaby Rasters, author of Hannah – a story about love, family, and a Volvo Amazon.
A good book doesn't just tell a story – it captivates, moves and stays with you. Hannah, the novel by Gaby Rasters, is just such a book. With great sensitivity, she describes the transformation of a woman who rediscovers herself after years of just functioning – on a road trip through Sweden, accompanied by her children, memories, music and an old Volvo Amazon.

Several years later, the family sets out for a road trip through Sweden. What starts as an attempt to tick off everything on Maaike's bucket list, turns into an emotional journey full of surprises. From old loves to new dreams: this journey brings them closer to both themselves and each other. But how do you achieve a balance between holding on and letting go?

We spoke with Gaby Rasters—about writing, life, and, of course, the charm of a Volvo Amazon.
How did you get into writing?
Ever since I was a little girl, I've been writing stories and poems and exchanging letters with pen pals all over the world—I still have most of those letters. In 2015, I wrote my first novel, mainly to tick something off my bucket list. To my surprise, it was a success, and readers immediately demanded a sequel. Not only the readers, but also a major publisher encouraged me to write the second and third parts. Ten years later, I have published 24 books and won several literary awards. My most important advice: always follow your passion and your dreams.
Was there a key moment or inspiration that led you to Hannah's story?
I find inspiration everywhere. One of my close friends, Oscar—at the time more of an acquaintance—owns a blue Volvo Amazon named Hannah. I thought that was impressive. He told me that he loved this car and Sweden, where he had spent his childhood and met a girl named Hanna. Indirectly, the car was named after her. My writer's heart immediately began to race. Half jokingly, I told him I would write a book about him and make every reader fall in love with him. At first, he laughed about it. But then he was diagnosed with an incurable disease. He asked me to turn the story that had taken shape in my head into a novel as part of his legacy. So I did. Oscar contributed details, and his love for Sweden runs through every page. Now I love Hannah too—and Sweden. Last summer, I even accompanied Oscar and Hannah on a short trip through Sweden. It felt surreal, as if I had stepped right into my own book. The novel is a feel-good road trip story about fulfilling a bucket list while traveling through Sweden, with Oscar and Hannah at the center.
What role does writing play in your life—is it a job, a calling, or something in between?
It's not my full-time job yet. I earn well from my books, but not enough to live on. I work full-time for the municipality, am a registrar, and write two books a year on the side. Writing is my greatest passion, and yes, I would call it my calling.
The Volvo Amazon plays a visible role on the book cover and in the story. Why this particular vehicle?
As I mentioned, it all started with Oscar's blue Amazon. I fell in love with Hannah myself and have seen how this car sparks conversation in both Sweden and the Netherlands. People can't help but stop and chat. When Oscar travels through Sweden with Hannah, he constantly makes new friends. It's as if Hannah is a companion on the journey.
What do you personally associate with the Volvo Amazon – do you have your own memories or experiences with the car?
For me, Hannah has become more than just a car; she has a soul. Oscar and Hannah are inseparable.
Do you yourself have a preference for old cars or modern classics?
To be honest, I don't like driving and I'm not a particularly good driver. But I have to admit that visiting a Volvo exhibition really moved me: I would love to own a Hannah – or another classic car – just to feel the same connection to my car that Oscar has to his.
How do readers react to the mention of the Volvo Amazon – is there any response from car enthusiasts?
The reaction I hear most often after people have read the book is: Now I want to go to Sweden too! And Hannah herself is becoming famous – people recognize her everywhere.
Will there be a sequel to the book? And if so, will a Volvo play a role again?
Challenge me, and I might write it!
