Battery mount and heat shield for Saab 900

06.02.2026

Like the battery base, the battery mount is often subject to corrosion in many older vehicles: frequently, the battery vent is not connected to a hose, and older car batteries usually begin to emit gas from the terminals. The battery water carries sulfuric acid out of the battery. This attacks pretty much everything that is not made of acid-resistant material. Today, battery carriers are usually made of acid-resistant plastic and the vent is connected to a hose. However, this only slowly became standard practice in the late 1990s.

In older vehicles, battery trays are usually made of painted sheet metal, and screws or brackets are usually also painted or perhaps galvanized. None of this offers much protection against possible acid attack. Outgassing at the terminals can be counteracted somewhat with terminal grease, and modern batteries usually have a plug for external venting – something that can be easily retrofitted.

In the classic Saab 900 up to 1993, the situation today is often similar to that in many other vehicles: the retaining plate is often rusted, as are the screw hooks, and in the worst case, they can only be removed with bolt cutters. In the Turbo, the situation is usually less severe due to the additional heat shield on the retaining plate, but it does occur occasionally.

We came across this during our own partial restoration and had the screw hooks and plate remade without further ado. We had the screw hooks made in M6 instead of the original M5 thread, which is slightly more stable and fits through the original slotted holes.

Like the originals, all parts are electro-galvanized. The screw hooks are available in a short version for turbos and a long version for vehicles with naturally aspirated engines, each as a set.

The retaining plate, which also acts as a heat shield, is the version for naturally aspirated engines. For turbos, the plastic heat shield from the old part must also be used. The holes for the corresponding rivets are provided.

The battery mount is now available in the shop under item numbers 1106326, 1106331 and 1106356 (for Saab Turbo) in our shop.

Suitable for the following vehicles:

  • Saab 900 (-1993) all models
