Spacer set for brake caliper brackets on Volvo Amazon and P1800

18.07.2025

When undergoing major repairs, classic cars sometimes present mechanics with strange puzzles. We now have new brake calipers, pads, and brake discs, but nothing fits together. The disc rubs against the caliper, the brake pad seems to be too thick...

But everything is correct, and it fits with the old caliper or brake disc, doesn't it?

Sometimes it's really hard to figure out, because a lot can happen in fifty or sixty years.

Has anyone ever reworked the brake disc gap in the caliper? Or is the caliper bracket, which has now been sandblasted three times, 2 mm thinner and the caliper is therefore simply further inside? Are the new wheel hubs the wrong size? Or was the brake disc only turned down on one side after being pressed on?

There are many possibilities. Among our old parts, we've even found brake calipers where the gap for the brake disc was simply widened by 2 mm at some point.

In fact, the problem is not entirely new. It first appeared in the late 1960s on the first Volvo P1800s with dual-circuit brakes from 1969, possibly due to different suppliers. At the time, the vehicle manufacturer responded with shims of various thicknesses that could be used to adjust the position of the brake caliper relative to the brake disc.

Our reproductions of wheel hubs and brake calipers are manufactured precisely according to original samples or even original drawings.

Because the brake disc has an oversize of more than two millimeters and is only turned down to the correct size after being pressed onto the wheel hub and bolt, it can happen that the brake disc rubs against the caliper or at least the pad does not fit into its seat.

Because we are aware of this problem and it could never be narrowed down to a specific component, we have now had adjustment plates produced for the Amazon and P1800 from 1963 to 1968. The small plate under the caliper allows the caliper to be moved inwards, while the large plate under the caliper bracket allows it to be moved outwards.

The adjustment plates are 0.5 mm thick and made of stainless steel for a perfect fit.

The perfect solution for adjusting the position of your brake caliper is now available in our shop under the number 1102647.

Suitable for the following vehicles:

  • Volvo Amazon, from 1964
  • Volvo P1800, from 1963 to 1968, up to chassis no. 30000
