Shock absorber Front/ Rear axle Oil pressure

Saab 96

21.12.2021

Mounting hint for shock absorbers of other manufacturers in a Saab 96 here especially for kayaba.

Changing shock absorbers of a Saab 96 is very easy. You don`t need spring compressors and it requires not much time. Take your car on a lift or jack it up on chassis stands and dimantle the wheels.

Now the particular wheel has to be retained for taking a load on the spring. At the front axle jack it under the suspension arm, at the rear under the brake drum. To prevent a turning away of the brake drum, use the hand brake.
If you repair your car on a lift, use for jacking a transmission jack, on chassis stands use a jack.

Now you can dismantle the particular shock absorber. In the front they are mounted with two eyes. For removing the shocks you only have to unscrew the two nuts. If the rubber mounting adheres on the bolt, use  penetrating oil and a mounting lever for removing them.
The inner rubber mounting mostly adheres on the bolt when the shocks are away. Therefore use a pipe wrench.
For mounting the new shocks use new lock washers like original or new nylon lock nuts. Don forget the big washers on the rubber mountings otherwise they nuts won`t hold the mountings.

The rear shocks are mounted with an eye on the bottom side an with a bolt on the upper one. The bottom would be dismantled like the front shocks, but first dimantle the upper ones:
You will find them on the wheel housing in the boot. First dissolve the lock nut, then the other one. If you cn,t dissolve the bottom nut, use a vice-grip wrench or a monkey wrench to hold the bolt. Otherwise the bolt will rotate jointly with.

This must be pointed out by mounting the absorbers: The upper rubber bearing has a rim (left in the picture) at the bottom side. This rim leads the absorber piston and prevents rubbing at the body.
The rubber bearings of some component suppliers like Kayaba don`t have this rim.  Kayaba delivers a third washer for this with the absorbers. Place the washer under the upper bearing with the rim showing down.
On the bottom side of the absober you also need a new lock washer (right in the picture a used one) for the nut. Don`t forget to lock the two nuts on the upper side.
Now you can mount the wheels and have fun with the new absorbers in your car.
