Reversing lever bushing Genuine and PE

Volvo 121, 140, 164, P1800

30.11.2021

General note on the correct installation of the reversing lever bushing on Volvo models from 1967 on.

If the steering forces become too great or play occurs at the reversing lever, a new bushing is required.

Remove the nuts and push out the tie rod ends.

If you do not have an impact wrench, you should now loosen the bearing nut on the reversing lever.

Then unscrew the three mounting screws through the body member. Now you have the complete reversing lever disassembled.

If not done before, now unscrew the nut of the bearing with an impact wrench.

You should now be able to remove the lever from the bearing bolt. If this is not possible, the bearing bolt probably looks like the one on this picture.

In such a case the lever must be pressed from the bearing bolt with a press.

Then press the bearing busing out of the lever housing.

No matter which variant of bushing is to be used: The bearing pin of the reversing lever must not look like at the previous picture. Either the bushing will not be pressed on properly or the steering will be stiff afterwards.

The pin must be cleaned, there must be no deposits or rust.

We have done this by clamping the threaded part in a stationary drilling machine with abrasive cloth and fleece. But be careful with this: the lever base bracket creates quite an imbalance and can injure the person carrying out the work, so choose a rather low speed. Of course, a turning lathe is suitable. By hand the work might be a bit laborious.

Now the new bushing can be pressed into the lever. Then grease the bolt slightly before putting on the bearing and use a new nut in any case.

If the bushing is used in its genuine version, a slight initial stiffness is normal.
