Pressing out the control arm bushings Volvo 700 and 900

16.01.2024

Here we show you how to press out the control arm bushings of the Volvo 700 and 940 and 960 (-94) series. Please observe the safety precautions when working with a hydraulic press! Safety goggles are mandatory to protect your eyes against possibly flaking off rust particles!

Remove the control arm and unbolt the the thrust prop. Brush the rust off the bushing as good as possible and lubricate with rust solvent.

Insert plate 1083070 between the collar of the bushing and the control arm itself. Make sure the cutaway is seated correctly.

Place the control arm with the plate under your hydraulic press. Make sure the plate has as much supporting surface as possible. The collar of the bushing has to be clear downwards.

Place arbor 1080642 as exactly as possible on the bushing and pump your hydraulic press down until the extrusion punch has contact with the arbor. If the bushing is very rusty and weak the arbor might push itself to one side of the bushing. In that case you have to cut or grind down the bushing until the steel on the edge is strong enough.
If the bushing will not move out of the control arm at all you may want to apply heat carefully.
If the pressing power is very high you may want to turn the open end of the plate sideways, so that the plate has the highest possible contact surface.

If the bushing started moving out once, it will come out easy the rest of the way.

When the bushing is pressed out successfully, you should clean the seat in the control arm properly. Rust has to be removed completely. You may lube the seat of the bushing with a little grease or oil to prevent rust and to make it easier to press in the new bushing. The pressing in of the new bushing is done in reverse order with the arbor 1080463.
