Interior door handle: Replacemement of the retaining spring

08.01.2024

Starting point: The door handle is not returning into its resting position and is loose and not looking right.

Remove the frame around the door handle with a flat screwdriver or a plastic wedge.

Remove the frame.

Remove the screw cover.

Unscrew the fastening screws of the door panel.

Remove the three retaining clips at the bottom of the door panel.

Product No: 1013462

Take off the door panel carefully to the top. Firmly push the door panel a bit upward first, then pull the door panel away from the door. Otherwise the retaining lugs might break.

Drive out the pin on which the door handle and the locking knob are rotating. Use a thin punch for this.

Remove the pin completely.

Removed locking knob and door handle. Easy visible: A piece of the old returning spring broke off.

Insert the new returning spring in the door handle...

...and hold it down firmly during the reinstallation

Reinstall the door handle and the locking knob.

It might be easier to do it in two steps: First insert only the door handle and push in the pin far enough to prevent the handle from falling off. Second: Insert the locking knob now and continue pushing in the pin.

Push the pin completely through the door handle and locking knob until it is properly seated again.

Reassemble in reverse order. Result: The door handle is tight in its resting position, as good as new!
