30.11.2021A warning notice for disassambly when replacing the seals at the M30/M40 gearboxes or M31/M41 Overdrive.
Just release the rear gearbox cover but do not remove it. When removed, you have to disassemble the complete gearbox. The bearing neeedles will fall out of the input shaft and the synchronisation unit also can fall apart.
For the assembly of the gearbox, you need the Volvo-tools 2302/2303 as a placeholder for the countershaft. Otherwise you can`t hold the bearing needles in their position. These tools are no longer aviable, but they can be easily self-made of an old shaft for example.
In case of disassembly of the complete gearbox you should fix the seal of the rear cover with liquid sealing on it. By mounting the countershaft you have to turn the cover around the shaft.
You better set the screws for the cover with liquid thread seal.
The shaft seal you can replace without disassembling the complete gearbox.
You can remove the front cover of the gearbox, but don`t remove the bearing of the input shaft. It`s the same topic: The bearing needles would fall out of their position.
You also better set the screws for the front cover with additionally liquid thread seal.
