Changing the gear knob and gear lever gaiter
Volvo V40 (2013-), V40 CC
06.03.2026Changing a gear knob or the gear shift boot can be difficult because it is not clear how the parts are unlocked. In the worst case, this can result in unintentional damage. To prevent this situation, we will show you how to remove them using a V40 as an example.
At higher mileages, the coating and leather of the gear knob occasionally peel off. Apart from the unsightly appearance, the splintering chrome coating can also be very sharp-edged and lead to injuries.
Pull the frame with the sleeve as far as possible upwards over the gear knob.
Lever the retaining ring off the gear lever. To do this, press the spring downwards.
On vehicles with gear lever lighting, disconnect the lighting connector at the bottom of the gear lever bracket.
Now carefully lever two latches outwards at the same time under the top of the cuff to be able to pull the cuff downwards from the knob. Do not break off the catches! If the lower end of the knob is now exposed, you must also press two catches outwards here in order to be able to pull the knob off.
The knob, sleeve and ring can now be removed.
Assembly is carried out in reverse order.
