Brake Front Saab 96
Saab 95, 96
22.12.2021Installation note for brake discs and pads on the front of the Saab 95/96 V4.
This manual is only partially valid for the brakes of the Monte Carlo, brake pads and calipers are different.
On the Saab 96, the brake calipers must be dismantled to replace the brake discs. To do this, first bend the locking plates on the fastening screws with a screwdriver.
Unscrew Caliper and push the piston back slightly.
Hang the saddle at an appropriate place (suspension spring, for example) with wire or cable ties so as not to load the brake hose
Remove the wheel hub spline pin and the crown nut.
Now put the brake disk together with the hub back into the correct position on the axle stub and tighten with the castle nut to 18Mkg = 176Nm. Secure the crown nut with a new split pin.
Reassemble the brake caliper.
If the pads are to be replaced, bend the pins, pull out and remove the clamping plate. Push the piston back and turn the saddle into position.
Note: In this tilt caliper brake, the pads are worn when the pad surface is ground down parallel to the pad base.
Clean the brake calliper and put the new brake pads in place with e.g. a little ATE Plastilube (Skandix 1049363) at the sliding points.
Place the clamping plate in its position.
Insert new spline pins and bend them so that they cannot turn out.
Then bend the locking plates of the fastening screws back to the securing position. If the locking plates tear, new ones must be used.
The ride can start again with new brakes as soon as the wheels are back on the car.
