Saab 900 (-93)

30.11.2021

To replace the often damaged plastic bushing and the copper ball bearing above it, the following parts must first be disassembled:

- Disconnect the battery
- Centre console
- lower steering column cover
- Knee protection (lower dashboard cover)
- Steering wheel
- if present: Airbag and coil spring (Attention: Specialist knowledge required!)
- Steering column control stalks

If the plastic bushing is badly damaged, the bearing can usually be easily removed from its seat with pliers. Remove the remains of the bushing from the bearing. If it is to be used again, clean it a little and grease it with silicone grease. If not, remove the rubber frame from the old bearing, pull it over the new one and grease it as well.

Grease the plastic bushing and push it into the bearing.

Remove rust and dirt from the steering column. Use a grinding pad if necessary.

Place the completed bearing with the flange side of the plastic bushing first and push it on as far as possible.

Now use a suitable impact tool (e.g. Skandix 1074167) to align the steering column including bearing in front of the cage.

When it is aligned, tap the complete unit into the seat with 2-4 light hammer blows.

Our pictues shows the correct position. The rubber seat sticks about 2mm out of the cage.

The rest of the assembly is then done in reverse order.
