Intake hose Turbo

Volvo 700, 900

01.12.2021

Hints for diagnostics an mounting of the intake hose between airflow sensor and turbocharger.

This is an original intake hose between the airflow sensor and the turbo of a Volvo 940 turbo. Here it is in used condition, defect and without the heating unit.
He can be responsible for strange symptoms, that may be difficult to explain or to diagnose.

If they have higher mileage, the turbo engines sometimes may act constricted at high rotation speed. A fluctuating gas intake, bad performance or suddenly dying engine can be a sign for the following: Over time the intake hose ist getting very soft because of the oil coming from the crankcase ventilation.
At full throttle this can lead to a suddenly contracting hose and a dying engine.
That usually occurs at higher temperatures and after a longer driving distance.
If the temperatures are a little bit colder, the engine is running nomally.
From our experience this failure is very temperature-dependent.

In the silicone hose that we deliver, the heating for crankcase ventilation is not included. You have to take it from the old hose. Older plastic parts are getting brittle, so you have to remove it very carefully. To remove it, cut the hose in vertical direction as seen on the picture. Now you ca remove the heating very simple.

The lower collar of the heating makes it diffcult to mout it in the new hose. Cut off a lttle bit from the collar, 60-90° of the circumference is enough. Now you can screw it carefully into the hose, use silicone spray for this. Then fix the heating with a hose clamp or a cable strap.
You better don`t do this at cold temperatures. Older plastic parts are getting brittle, so you have a bigger risk to destroy the heating.
After the replacement of the intake hose the full performance of your turbo engine will be back!
