Heater control valve and adapter plate without AC

Volvo 700, 900

26.04.2022

The original adapter plate is no longer available and is easily damaged. It is mounted on the heater control valve. You only can change the adapter plate and heater control valve without damages in a dismounted status. Now we can deliver you a heavy duty reproduction where the weak points are stronger realized.

Dismantle the cover in the legroom behind the steering wheel. At the upper side unscrew three torx screws, at the lower left side dismantle the clip. Pull the cover out of it`s guide bars.

The heater control valve is normally getting leak at the bearing point of the control lever.

Drain a part of the coolant water, clamp the heating hoses in the engine bay and disconnect them. Normally you only have to disconnect the lower hose. If you disconnect both hoses you will reduce the danger of getting coolant in on th carpet.

For turning the adapter plate with the valve you should dismantle both hoses to the heat exchanger. Mostly the hoses are very tight on their fitting, you better cut them off with a knife. We recommend to order new hoses, Part No. 1014395, 1014396.
You better keep a drain bottle and some tissue ready for absorbing the coolant. Best for this is a measuring cup which contains 1l maximum. First cut off the lower hose at the valve and push it into your drain bottle for drainage. So you won`t have a lot of coolant in your carpet floor.

Dismantle the lower bowden cable from the adapter plate. Therefore open the metal clamp and unhook the bowden cable. In this picture you see one of the potential points of break at the original adapter plate!

Now dismantle the upper bowden cable from the adapter plate. Under the white clip (next picture) is a plastic bolt. Holding the adapter plate you can pull the bolt out of it. Now unhook the bowden cable, best while you turning the adapter plate in clockwise rotation.

Now turn the plate with the valve farther in clockwise rotation to the point where you can pull them out of the front bulkhead.

Click the adapter plate on thw new heater valve. Doing this, look after the valve lever. It has to sit in it`s guideway. Don`t clamp it beside the guideway.
Put the foam rubber ring (1072645, next picture) on the new valve on the engine side.

Now put the adapter plate with the new valve into the front bulkhead and turn it against clockwise direction into it`s correct position. While turning, hook in the upper bowden cable in it`s lever.

After turning the adapter plate into the front bulkhead, put in the plastic bolt of the upper bowden cable in it. Then mount the lower bowden cable. Check the standard routing of the heating control, you can adjust it by moving the lower bowden cable under the clamp.

Mount the two short heater hoses to the heat exchanger.

Mount the heater hoses from the engine side and unclamp the hoses.

Fill up the drained coolant, start the engine and check the new heater control valve for function and tightness. Evacuate the air from the cooling system and fill up possibly missing coolant.
Check your carpet floor and insulating map. If it is wet, take them out of your car. Clean it with water and let it dry before mounting again.
Mount the legroom cover again and you are ready!
