Tools for the trailing arm bushes on the Volvo 200 and 164

The rear axle bushes on the Volvo 240, 260 and 164 from 1975 onwards can sometimes be a source of annoyance.

They are the connection between the trailing arm and the axle and have to absorb a lot of lateral forces when cornering. As a result of this and of course also due to age, the vulcanization becomes loose or the rubber webs simply tear off.

The result is poor handling due to the axle shifting sideways when cornering. In the worst case, the wheels rub in the wheel arch and damage the tires and paintwork. We already had a car like this in the workshop as a test object, with clear rubbing marks in the wheel arch.

Volvo designed it this way at the time with the aim of increasing comfort; on the Amazon, this connection was still rigid. Even later on the Volvo 700/900, the trailing arms were again bolted firmly to the axle.

Replacing these bushes is a rather difficult task without the appropriate special tool: the two-part mountings of the bushes are delicate and not connected to each other. If the wrong or unsuitable tool is used, they are quickly bent and the mounts are no longer aligned. Corrosion between the mounts and bushes naturally does not make things any easier on vehicles of this age. We have also seen bushes that have been hopelessly destroyed during installation.

The mechanics among us were almost all familiar with these problems, almost everyone has or has had a 240, so we took the original pressing tool as a sample and had it reproduced. We also had the support shell built, which is clamped between the two mounts and is not part of the pressing tool. It ensures that the two mounts retain their position in relation to each other.

Apparently, some mechanics have occasionally forgotten the support tray on the car, as it has been out of stock for a few years longer than the press tool set.

We tested the new tools and found them to be good. A colleague's Volvo 240 is now driving really well again and the repair was completed in two hours.

Finally, two tips from our own experience:

Before first use, all threads of pressing tools or pullers should always be well oiled or - even better - greased (e.g. with 1074346 Anti-Seize High-Tech assembly paste) to prevent galling.

Over the decades, corrosion has often caused the bearing seats of the bushings to become slightly larger. As a result, new bushes could move sideways and were therefore fixed in place with welding points in the seat. This was practiced even in authorized workshops. Check your old bushes for such welding points. These must be removed before using the pressing tool.
